Domestic Travel, REAL ID and Immigration Documents

Identification, permission to work and immigration protection serve different purposes. A document accepted at airport screening is not a guarantee against immigration enforcement.

Frequently asked questions

Does REAL ID give me immigration status?

No. REAL ID is an identification standard. The card itself does not grant immigration status, work authorization or protection from detention. Pennsylvania allows qualifying non-U.S. citizens to apply with specified documents; eligibility and card validity depend on their circumstances.

Is a work permit the same as lawful immigration status?

No. Approval of Form I-765 authorizes employment; it does not by itself grant immigration status. A person may have separate immigration status or protection underlying the work permit. The category, current applications and court history matter.

Can TSA accept an employment authorization card?

TSA lists an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766) among acceptable identification documents. Check the current TSA identification guidance, expiration requirements and airline instructions before traveling. Acceptance for identity screening does not resolve immigration eligibility or enforcement questions.

Are asylum and withholding of removal the same?

No. They are different forms of protection. Asylum may offer a path to permanent residence and certain family benefits when requirements are met. Withholding of removal generally restricts removal to a particular country and does not provide those same benefits. A withholding order should not be treated as a green card or a promise that detention cannot occur.

Does a domestic flight guarantee there will be no immigration encounter?

No document or domestic itinerary can support that blanket promise. An individual review may need to consider immigration history, prior removal orders, pending matters, conditions of release and the exact documents held. This guide does not advise any particular person to travel or cancel travel.

What should I gather for a pre-travel legal review?

Bring your current identification and work permit, immigration receipt and approval notices, immigration-court decisions and orders, release or supervision documents, and proposed itinerary. Preserve complete copies. Do not post document numbers or case details in public comments.

Why are Pennsylvania families asking about this now?

An October 9, 2026 KYW report describes a Delaware County mother’s detention during a domestic family trip. Her account and her attorney’s description of her immigration history are reported claims; this guide does not independently establish the legality of that detention or predict another traveler’s experience.
